We often get asked this question. It’s understandable, and I’ll try to address it from my point of view.
The ICA instructors are all working colorists, constantly balancing our training classes with grading commitments to our clients.
A training class has to be locked and publicized at least 2 months beforehand. This allows us sufficient time to promote the class, but also means we are unavailable for grading work during that time. This is something of a trade-of; occasionally I miss work while running a class, other times the phone isn’t ringing red hot so the training is a better option.
All ICA instructor expenses are paid for by the class so we need a set number of students to make visiting a city viable. We all love working in the industry, (and if you don’t running a training class won’t be for you), but we still have expenses that need to be covered. For this reason we try and maximize the chances of getting the most students in a class, meaning a visit to New York, London or Singapore.
I make an effort to counter this by visiting a smaller city periodically, or one not normally know as a post-production ‘hot bed’.
Earlier this year I went to Cambodia to run a private class at Hang Maes in Phnom Pehn. This was a great experienced documented here. https://icolorist.com/grading-4k-f55-raw-in-cambodia/
In May, I received two separate e-mails from a DP and a photographer asking if I would consider running some classes in Taiwan. 2 weeks later, my former student, DP Luke Cameron said he would facilitate an ICA class in Taipei if I fancied a change of scene.
His enthusiasm, coupled with the high regard I have had for my previous Taiwanese students, led to us announcing 6 days of classes starting on November 28th R101, November 30th R201 and December 2nd Warren’s Looks and Matching Masterclass.

The hardest thing about setting up a new ICA class is securing a great venue and then finding local partners, for help with kit and publicity. The Taipei week is slightly different as it is a BYO machine. This means we can keep our costs down, which in turn makes the classes more attractive.
Our partners for this trip are the Red Room http://redroomtaipei.com who are hosting and Hiprotech who are providing equipment for the event. https://www.facebook.com/Hiprotech.tw
I am not sure how these classes will go but I was very pleased to see a blog post from a local writer whose comment to me was ‘You guys don’t come to places like this” Thanks to Kent Chen http://www.dv-asia.com/blog/?p=2695
We do now:)
