iColorist is one of the most prominent and recognized organizations dedicated to teaching color in the post-production sector.
We train and support working colorists, editors, cinematographers, directors, DITs, VFX artists, restoration artists, audio engineers and DPs with staff positions at major facilities or busy freelancers working on a wide variety of television, commercial and feature film content.
Major post facilities and broadcasters contract with iColorist to train their people on best color correction practices and color science.
Our instructors are active professionals who work around the world. Together they have accumulated more than 200 years of experience that they are happy to share with their students. We’ve taught classes in 46 cities across 5 continents, but now also offer online and remote learning – in a variety of time zones and languages.
We teach classes at beginner, advanced and masterclass levels on color science, HDR, daVinci Resolve, monitor calibration, colorist strategies, digital makeup, looks, specific classes for work on commercials or feature films, and so much more.
We offer the following solutions to your color problems:
Book a remote private session with a veteran expert to work through technology issues, recharge your creative mind, or fill a niche gap in your knowledge.
Just let us know what you need to get out of your time and we will pair you with a specialist working colorist that can help. Rates start at US$99 per hour for private training or consultation.
iColorist offers live virtual colorist training! All iColorist classes are available online using Zoom or similar software. Keep an eye on our upcoming classes calendar or contact us to explain your interests. We run live group remote classes for groups of up to six students that mirror the in-person experience. Our remote classes are smaller, take up less time, and offer more breaks than our in-person classes. We provide the media for use during class and afterwards. All students attending remote classes receive a training certificate.
We run our remote classes the same way as our in-person classes. We offer most classes twice per year in each major time zone (or more based on demand.)
What if the class is not in my time zone?
We run our remote classes in different time zones to make it as convenient as possible for you to find a class you can attend. We use moderators and/or translators as needed.
Where can I see a schedule of remote classes?
All iColorist classes appear in the calendar on the iColorist.com home page.

How will I get the training footage and supporting documents?

An understanding of color grading can benefit the end-to-end filmmaking process. Film schools give students the foundations for the rest of their career, but color is a specialist and often overlooked part of filmmaking, and needs to be understood by every role from DP to editor. We can design a several day or several week curriculum to give your students crash course in color, to better equip them in their future roles.
Every piece of recorded footage will be color managed and graded. Understanding how to factor this into filmmaking and use it as part of the vision, as well as its technical management, will give students of film a well-rounded knowledge base and an industry edge.
Adding an understanding of color to your curriculum is as simple as 1-2-3.
1. Get in touch today. Email us for an initial discussion about your needs, budget, curriculum, and goals.
2. Design your customized curriculum. Choose your modules, marking system, class size, and format.
3. Continue to optimize. Tweak the syllabus as needed to maintain up-to-date offerings and incorporate changes based on student feedback.
iColorist can put together customizes, private, intensive group courses designed to meet your organization’s specific needs. We can run several classes per day or run classes over the course of several weeks as needed to give your people the training they need in everything from color theory to film looks to the latest features in color grading software. For example, you may wish to have iColorist produce a custom training course to support a new project or suite.
We can conduct private group classes on site using your equipment at your facility, or remotely.
Everything is scalable. Have a look at our existing classes or let us know what you need. We can customize an existing class based on your particular needs and interests or create something completely new.
We keep our private group classes as affordable as possible. We base the cost on duration, number of instructors needed and their availability, subject matter, and other factors.

Your instructor, Kevin Shaw, CSI is a legend in the realm of color grading. His unique experience as a colorist, a consultant on DaVinci and Nucoda products, a professional calibrator, workflow specialist. His recent years at Mission working with DITs and Labs has made him the go-to maestro for all things color-related in the world of color science and Imaging. Not everyone can teach, but Kevin has taught thousands of individuals in private classes, at film schools and major companies including Amazon, Netflix, Sky, BBC, CBS, Kodak, and Dolby.
The Color Pipeline Mentor Program allows participants to learn wider disciplines and is structured to help with ongoing projects during the course. Kevin has an excellent track record of identifying trends that define the future, and has been an early adopter of pipeline color management, ACES and HDR. He brings the benefits of these technologies to every project – and that is the basis of this new program. Working better costs nothing and improves everything.
High Dynamic Range (HDR) has been available to consumers since 2016 and has been widely adopted in media and entertainment. But, do you really know what HDR is? This course, taught by Kevin Shaw, is much more than a tutorial. Structured classes will help you master HDR, learn about HDR displays, and how to grade HDR content. You’ll understand the different HDR formats, including Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG. While most of the course aims to be application-agnostic (HDR theory and not button pushing), you will also learn how to set up and grade HDR in DaVinci Resolve.
HDR is unanimously claimed as better, but it significantly affects workflow from capture and mastering through to delivery and display. With a deeper knowledge of HDR workflows, formats, and display technologies, you can better invest, implement and explore the possibilities the tech brings. Learn to differentiate good HDR from poor HDR and showcase HDR from technical HDR.
Aim of the course: learn new skills for HDR
This course is much more than a one-off tutorial. Learn to take full advantage of new workflows and develop new skills for high dynamic range content. Experience how lighting, editing and grading are affected, and which tools are most useful to achieve bigger, better color. Learn the three essential workflows for HDR mastering. The course covers critical concepts and practical considerations for HDR production, workflow, grading, mastering, distribution, and viewing. You will also build your vocabulary around HDR and communicate effectively in technical and creative related discussion.
Course targeted towards colorists, VFX artists, DIT, editors, and more
This is an introductory level course ideal for colorists, engineers, cinematographers, DITs, VFX artists, and editors involved in HDR pre-production, production and post-production. It’s also useful for producers, directors and designers as they encounter demand for HDR, Dolby vision, UHD Premium, Rec 2020, and wide color gamut. If you are looking for a structured HDR tutorial, this course is for you.
An HDR display is useful for the practical exercises, but not necessary for the course. Ideally, you’ll want to take this course before investing in HDR if you can, as it will save you time and money! The course utilizes Resolve to explain many of the principles but you don’t need to be an experienced colorist to get a lot of information out of the course.
Materials provided in the downloads for the course
You will receive instruction in 13 class movies filmed at Dolby London, as well as three Resolve archives with projects and media to grade.
Project 1 has test images and raw content from the BlackMagic Design BMPCC 6k camera
Project 2 is an SDR quicktime promo that you will trim to HDR
