The first ICA Resolve class was in 2010 at Media Village in Singapore. It was run on a R250 Linux machine using Resolve version 6. I had 8 students huddled round 1 system looking at a 24’ monitor. I would demo a feature than each student would take turns in the colorist chair whilst the others slept at the back, some did I’m sure.
That was the only option for training back then. DaVinci had disbanded their training program and apart from my 2007 FXPHD dual 2k/Resolve online class there were no other training options. It was hard, but remember the system cost upwards of $250,000 in 2010.
Jump to 2013 and a lot has changed, Resolve is now up to V10, with most users downloading and using the free version. The training scene has changed too. The online market is now crowded with different options, some of them are free. The classroom environment hasn’t exploded as much, there’s a reason for that, it’s hard work to do it properly.
The dates for the first ICA Resolve V10 classes were based on last years V9 launch. In 2012 we were running London V9 classes in late July, so I figured late August in NYC would be a great place to start V10 training.
The class nearly didn’t happen. As the beta release got put back, so did my prep time, I thought about postponing the class, or maybe jumping back to a V9 class.
In the end I did a lot of my prep on V9 then got a week with V10 before heading to NYC. That prep included jumping straight in and doing 3 jobs back in Australia with the new code. It is sometimes the best way to learn new software….just jump in.
The NYC R101 saw faces from the US, Germany, China and Canada, coming from editing, shooting and design backgrounds. The students had 27’ iMacs combined with Wave and Element controllers. A MacPro with a GTX680 card, BMD panels, and FSI 32” monitor sat at the front of the room for me. All students are encouraged to move around the room getting experience with the different panels and monitors.
The V10 software overall was very stable, we had some small issues but nothing that really slowed us down. The editors in the class really appreciated the new editing and finishing tools, nobody enjoys round-tripping….do they?
We took a gamble putting on a V10 class before release, I am glad we did.
“This was fantastic, I have done lots of these type of classes and this is the only time I have ever wanted to exchange contact details with my fellow students”
