The ICA L.A. Training Center is up and running. We have partnered with Roush Media an established DI Post facility to provide a permanent American home for Colorist training. Roush Media is situated in Burbank, California, just outside Los Angeles, 45 minutes from LAX airport.
Our first set of classes were in a large temporary space but the plan is to move the training machines into the current DI theatre allowing Keith Roush DI Colorist to move into a new purpose built 20 seat grading theatre. The ICA theatre will be equipped with a projector showing the software GUI switching to PowerPoint presentations when needed. The students will have point of sight to both the projector and the trainer allowing them to follow the class talking to the trainer if they wish. I think as an instructor it is very important to have that eye contact and not be stuck at the front of the class facing a bank of monitors. Being based in Australia, a 13 hour flight away, means it is important to maximise my time in the US by offering as much variety in classes as possible. This trip we scheduled a Colorist Strategies class, 2 Resolve 101s, and a “Looks” class.
The weekend Resolve 101 provided to be a great success as a mixture of staff and freelancers joined together to make a very knowledgeable and informative group. The advantage of the weekend option meant that the guys could join the class without missing work, so making the class so much more accessible for both employees and employers.
Our group of 5 consisted of:
-
a DP/Camera hire boss.
Editor/Colorist
Previs Supervisor
Edit/workflow specialist
On set Camera assistant/Junior Colorist
The 5 students constantly shared information and experiences, adding lots of value to the class. This is a big advantage of working in a group, you get so much more than the set class structure. The students were constantly sharing and swapping ideas on kit specification, setup, workflows and grading experiences.
The general feeling from the class was that it was more advanced than a 101 and that it was tough to get through everything in 2 days. This means in the future we might offer a 3 day Resolve 101.5 in addition to a 2 day 201 advanced class including the Resolve control surface.
Please give us feedback on what you want to see from the ICA, different applications, more creative or technical classes?
“I found the ICA class to be exceptionally informative. Warren was not only very knowledgeable in the art of color grading but was also very generous in sharing his knowledge and experience.”
