On my recent visit to the US I was engaged by Clark Muller, colorist and owner of Incendio to conduct a day of Resolve workflow training. Incendio is a very successful grading shop in Venice Beach, Los Angeles, with big credits for Toyota, Samsung and Lamborghini.
They currently use x2 Nucoda Film Masters, running Precision panels and Dolby PVM 4220 monitors.
Incendio have recently installed a new MacPro to run other software to complement their current system and workflows. With Resolve 11 loaded my job was to run through the editing and conforming features with their team of colorists, Clark, Lewis Silva and Cassidy Greenwood.
The guys have seen a steep increase in Red Dragon footage recently, so were very interested in how the 6K material performed on the new MacPro. Incendio just grade they don’t finish so are always rendering their grades then handing the files over to online and VFX houses to finish. We wanted to test their typical workflow for a commercial by rendering individual source clips. I loaded a timeline mixed with Dragon 6k, Red Anamorphic, C500 and Sony F65.
In Resolve we applied a typical grade then rendered out as individual clips to .dpx, keeping the original frame rate, source resolution, names and timecode. The only thing that had changed was the color of the clip. The Mac pushed these out at 24fps at Half Res Premium playing off the internal storage in the MacPro. We also tested playing off an external Lacie Rugged TB drive, again getting very near RT at Half Res Premium.
I also went over the new Clone tool, Trim Clips, and running multiple timelines using Remote grades. The ‘Use Commercial Workflow’ was a feature they really liked. The 3 Colorists soon got up to speed with Resolve 11 and started digging deeper into the color tools.
In todays Color correction workflows we use a number of different types of software to get the job done. Resolve just becomes another ‘Arrow in the Quiver’ for Incendio.
It was great to work with Clark again, he trained me, now I was training him!! I was his first assistant 25 years ago when we worked together at Visions in Soho London. We worked together mainly on TVCs, concerts and Music Videos.
