It’s OK grading beautifully shot material, but sometimes we need to challenge ourselves. That’s why my classroom footage is a mix of cameras, good and bad material, plus a mixture of XMLs, EDLs and baked workflows.
The R201 challenge we worked on today consisted of a 30sec TVC edited from previous campaigns. RED, Alexa and PSD still shots had to be conformed from a Premier XML. I demonstrated how to match each clip, then explained the creative options we could pursue once the timeline was balanced. I then gave the students 45mins to finish the TVC using either the Tangent Element/ Ripple or the BMD surface. Not long I know but today’s colorist has to work under pressure! Each student then rendered their work to central EditShare storage and we reviewed each TVC on the FSI monitor. I critiqued each commercial with the students. It is amazing how different 9 people can grade 5 shots. A great exercise that really puts the student on the spot in front of both myself and their fellow classmates. Great fun we’ll do it again.
