About Paul

Paul Hanrahan is an experienced senior colorist who has worked in South Africa from 1994 till 2009 and in Taiwan from 2009 till the present. He has color graded a wide range of work including: TV Commercials, Feature Films, Documentaries, TV series, short films, and Music videos. He is Dolby Vision certified and a full member of the Colorist Society International.

At this later stage in his career, he wants to give back to the film industry by educating the younger generations. He does in-person and online teaching to individuals and companies.

He also creates and exhibits various visual arts such as photography, sculpture and video artworks.

He graduated with a BSc in Electrical Engineering from University of the Witwatersrand in 1994. He is an engineer by training but an artist at heart and love combining art and technology to tell stories through film and other visual media.

He lived and worked in South Africa until 2009 in various capacities as an inhouse facility colorist, small production company owner, and post production supervisor.

In 2009 he relocated to Taiwan and took a senior colorist role at post facility, Digimax Inc. In 2019 he received Taiwan citizenship through their policy of welcoming foreigners with special talents in the fields of art and technology.

30 years’ experience in post-production facilities as colorist, visual effects supervisor and producer has given him good familiarity with most aspects of our industry. As a fine artist he also has interest in new visual media such as VR and projection mapping.

He can teach in English and Mandarin Chinese. He has been interviewed by Nikon Taiwan and maintains relationships with companies like ASUS.

Paul initially came to Taiwan to learn martial arts so when he was interviewed by Warren Eagles for his Color Tour podcast. Warren titled it: “The Kung Fu Colorist”.

He does one-on-one mentoring for colorists. Including weekly zoom calls, helping them with the full gamut of creative and business aspects of our craft and various teaching topics.

He has produced an ongoing series of teaching videos for the Colorist Foundry.

He hosts the Color Mentor Podcast. Each episode is an in-depth discussion with an industry expert, appealing to a niche market of color grading professionals. Previous interviewees include: Thatcher Freeman, Kaur Hendrikson, Steve Shaw, Jason Iversen, Troy Sobotka, Kevin Shaw, Akiyoshi Kitaoka and Menno Drieschor.

He has helped in setting up non-profit groups for colorist and DIT’s in Taiwan and South African. Hosting monthly meetings for members in both regions. The main focus is on training and development. He is currently the Director of Training and Professional Development for the South African Finishing Artists and Image Technicians Society (SAFAITS).
