The London class was held from May 10th to May 12th 2010 in the Digital Vision training room in Wardour Street, which is a short walk from most of the major facilities in town. Nine colorists from diverse backgrounds attended, some from London, and some from Norway, Finland, Poland and Turkey. Between us we had first hand experience of Quantel, Adobe, Film Light and Digital Vision grading solutions, and everyone of us has Apple Color.
We covered all the usual topics in my curriculum – colorist theory, color tool comparisons and use, colorist strategies and various effects, styles and looks. The theory day was very popular, and I am considering breaking that into a separate 2 day course – Let me know if that would be of interest.
Since the course sold out so early I am running it again July 5-7.
I am now in LA, where we are running 2 extra classes for the first time. The Introduction Day is a less intense look at colorist theories of perception and psychology. It will start with some examples from feature films, and include a short history of color grading and the evolution of colorists from film to video to data. I hope to run these classes in London some time soon.
There is a very definite move towards boutique grading and colorist owner companies. Something that would have been financially impossible 10 years ago. I think there is a clear window of opportunity right now. The cost of entry has dropped and significantly more people are competing for colorist work. At some point the market will be over saturated (sorry about the pun) and the demand will be for more experience colorists. Until then the door is open…
Thank you to Digital Vision for their hospitality.
