I am currently in Japan sitting in a grading room, waiting for my clients to arrive. They are delayed so my mind wondered back to Amsterdam, where I conducted a Colorist Masterclass, here are my thoughts..
It was a fantastic honour to be asked to talk in front of the Dutch Colorist Guild before IBC this year. The DCG has only been running for 6 months and already has over 30 members. Hailed as a ‘Masterclass,’ I wasn’t sure what I could talk about for 4 hours. I wasn’t even sure if my audience could stay awake for 4 hours!
My host was Guy Molin, Colorist and facility owner, and his grading theatre proved to be a fantastic intimate venue. The audience was made up of 20 colorists all currently grading on a variety of systems and working in all areas of Film and TV. I wanted the guys to get involved and they did with great questions. This kept the presentation moving as I transitioned from talking at the front of the theatre to demonstrating and driving the Resolve from the back.
Topics covered were Log grading, RAW files, troubleshooting, working freelance, clients and workflows. Guy and I had also spent an hour in the morning shooting a number of charts under different conditions, just to show the new Color Match feature in Resolve 11. The Masterclass was run on Resolve but aimed to show more generic colorist workflows to my audience who consisted of Baselight, Lustre, Scratch, Nucoda and Resolve users.
Afterwards we got together for a few cans of the traditional Heineken brew, for more general Colorist chat. Thanks to the Dutch Colorist Guild for getting me involved, it was a great experience.
Meanwhile back in Japan, still no director, maybe nobody will show and I’ll just grade it solo:)
