Brisbane – January 27-29, 2010
The latest ICA “Colorist Strategies” class was held in Brisbane Australia during the last week of January. Four students from across Asia made it a great cross blend of talent all with different grading experience. Kapil from Nepal is a self taught Colorist who was looking to learn more looks and styles to broaden his creative talent. Nico is an editor from Singapore seeking to move in to a Junior Colorist role. Helen from Brisbane is in both production and post but wanted to understand the grading and workflow paths for both film and digital material. Phil is not in the industry but was very keen to learn Apple Color and to understand the creative role of the colorist.
The software used for the class was Apple “Color” each student machine mirrored my grading machine with the same media so the students would normally watch me run through a grading technique first, then would work on their own machine trying to recreate the “look” for themselves.
The 3 day class was broken into around 15 sections. We looked at all forms of color correction, including grading history, secondary correction windows and keys, grading both film and digital material, looks and styles, including r3d files and XDCAM EX3 footage supplied from a Nepalese feature.
The small group meant the students got lots of “hands on” with both the student I-Macs and the Mac Pro, Sony Monitor and Tangent Wave control panel. Even with their limited Color experience the guys could see the benefits of the Wave. By the end of the course I was playing the client and setting grading challenges to the students on the main grading machine. Everybody agreed the class was a great mix of technical and creative information. Good luck to all my students in the future.
“I enjoyed the class, and as someone new to Colour correction, it was a terrific introduction, hands on and realistic. I feel I now have the skills to start grading with some creative targets and directions in mind.” Helen Elliott
