Sam Sheppard is an award winning international freelance feature film, television and commercials colorist based in London. He has been professionally color grading for over 15 years and now specializes in HDR, 4K/UHD, ACES, Stereoscopic and multi-frame rate productions and has been responsible for many groundbreaking ‘firsts’ in international post production.
Sam was originally trained in New Zealand where he worked in the lab at Peter Jackson’s Park Road Post Production facility, and worked on set for such films as The Lovely Bones, Avatar, King Kong and many others. As well as working internationally as a colorist, Sam was the first colorist in the world to grade a 4K, multi-frame rate, stereoscopic feature film for Ang Lee in New York in early 2014. He was also the colorist responsible for the first 4K/UHD television production in the UK in 2013.
He regularly travels worldwide to work on feature films such as “Mad Max: Fury Road”, “The Great Gatsby” and James Cameron’s “Deep Sea Challenge 3D” and has worked for J.J. Abrams company Bad Robot in LA many times. In addition to this Sam has commercial clients in LA, NY and London and has worked on, amongst many others, ‘Chanel’, ‘Prada’ and ‘Hugo Boss’ international campaigns.
Unusually for a Colorist, Sam works on all color grading platforms and can teach all of the ICA courses on ANY of the following systems including Baselight, Resolve, Mistika, Pablo Rio, Lustre, Smoke, AVID, the Adobe Suite, FCPX, Assimilate as well as many VFX and image manipulation platforms. Sam often travels worldwide and regularly designs bespoke courses for individuals, facilities and small groups on various popular topics surrounding color grading in general, advanced workflows and complex modern techniques such as HDR, ACES and 4K/UHD for feature films, commercials and television.
Sam is also a world-renowned script to screen workflow consultant and technical specialist advising in RAW camera digital workflows, VFX pipelines and regularly consults for high-end screen manufacturers such as Canon, Dolby and Sony and has worked with many of the Color Grading platform manufacturers to better improve their color grading tool sets.
In addition to this Sam also teaches for REDucation, which is RED Digital’s worldwide training program in the UK and Europe and he provides comprehensive workflow and color grading training through RED as well as the ICA. He is also a panelist and speaker at International events run by SMPTE, AMPAS, BAFTA, NAB, IBC, BVE, 3D Creative Summit, Canon 4K EXPO, and a regular contributor to industry trade journals and articles.
Sam is currently an ICA Master Colourist and Instructor and is a founding member of Silverscreen Pictures.
